Welcome to the first Episode of July, 2012, in which we will be talking once again about our 'hood (short for neighborhood). We've talked about our 'hood before, in this Episode, and we think it's a good time to discuss some of the regular visitors to our little corner of the world. But first we must thank Amy again for helping out at our house recently. Yes, folks, you, too, will be mentioned in this blog if you help us out (yes this is a subtle hint).
Our first regular visitor is the ice cream man. It's been a couple of decades since either Bish or Becky lived in a neighborhood (long for 'hood) frequented by an ice cream truck. The truck that comes down our street is a standard white ice cream truck with a standard ice cream truck speaker on top. We have not met the driver, but he appears to be a man from India, medium height, with white hair and full white beard. I have seen people buy ice cream from him. I think I recall that the ice cream truck from my childhood played Pop Goes the Weasel as it drove around, but this ice cream truck plays the first few bars from Beethoven's Fur Elise over and over, in the ice cream truck style of music. Interestingly, whenever either Becky or Bish hears this rendition of Fur Elise we remember a certain McDonald's commercial from about 1986. Kudos to the marketing genius who put together this commercial that created such a strong mnemonic connection in our minds that we think about McDonald's when Fur Elise is played, even after 26 years. Here's a link to a YouTube video of said commercial.* **
Other frequent visitors to our 'hood are the lawn-care men. Several of our neighbors have professional lawn-care men come to their houses and maintain their lawns and plants. Wednesday seems to be the regular lawn-care day in our 'hood. Three times I have been approached by these men (three different men) to ask if we need our lawn mowed or our redwood tree maintained. Two of these men approached me while I was outside, and one came to the front door and knocked. Admittedly our front lawn looks pretty wild and untamed compared to our neighbors' lawns, but we might like it that way, and we have other priorities right now. When we get around to the yard we will be maintaining it ourselves.
The weather in our 'hood is, so far, mild - not too hot and not too cold. Inside the house the downstairs maintains a relatively even, cool temperature, while the upstairs can get quite warm during the day.
Painting
Now we will reveal some additional room painting. This particular room was actually the first room we started to paint, and it is the room for which the first can of paint was ceremoniously, and literally, opened. Here are two pictures to remind you of that momentous event.
And here is another picture of another freshly-opened can of paint. Its relevance will be revealed shortly.
So far no one has correctly guessed the exact names of either color of paint, but we've had some interesting guesses. Our favorite guess was, "macaroni and cheese," from LaHoma (AKA Anonymous), for the orange color, and the closest guess was, "blackberry," by MOM (AKA Bish's mom), for the purply color. Why are these colors presented together here? Because we used both of them to paint the master bedroom. Below you will see before and after pictures of this room.
These are the before pictures.
These are the after pictures. Note that the shelves are actual shelves and not just paintings of shelves.
Becky describes this pattern being in the mouth of a big, friendly monster. How many of you get to sleep in the mouth of a big, friendly monster?
And now the names of these colors can be publicly revealed so that those who wish to do so may copy us. The orange color is called Amber Glow, and the purple is called Blackberry Harvest. Thank you to all who guessed.
As we wrap up this Episode we wonder, is Fur Elise still playing in your head?

interesting hood story, I'm sure there will be more.
Ah, the bedroom colors are a bit too close to a particular school's colors, for my taste (Becky will know what I mean), but the design is interesting.
@DR It's really much more orange-y in person. I didn't even make the connection before your note. You'll like it when you see it.
Bish: Tell the other local people that I issue a challenge, that I dare them to beat my record of helping with your house! Perhaps they need a line in the sand. ;-)
DR: I guessed "LW Purple" as the name of the color, and RDR replied "maybe UW Purple," so that shade does look in person as you're thinking, but, as she says, the other shade is more orange-y.
RDR & Bish: That McD's commercial -- tune and lyrics -- is forever ingrained in my brain, too.
Well, I must say it turned out better than I thought when I first saw it! I hope you don't have nightmares about being eaten by sharks!
@DR Did you notice that it kind of looks like a "W" pattern, too?
@Mom As long as it's a friendly shark... :)
Sams gonna want his room painted like that after we come down to visit....
