New House Blog: Episode XXXI - Down In The Dumps Again

Welcome to Episode XXXI.  It seems like time has really flown since Episode I.  When we bought our house moving day seemed far away.  We thought we would be able to get all of our pre-move work done in two or three weeks.  Ah, the optimism that is brought about by ignorance.  At times it seemed like we would never move, and that the work would keep piling up interminably.  But here we are,  moved in for two weeks as of this post, and we're settling in nicely, as are the cats.  But we were quite down in the dumps the other day.

Thanks again to Bish's awesome brother, Mike, for lending us his behemoth of a pickup truck.  And thanks, Mike, for getting the truck's alignment and rear end fixed before lending it to us this second time.  While we're thanking people we'd also like to thank those who have mentioned in-person that they are reading our New House Blog.  Thank you all for your kind words.

Down In The Dumps

No, we were not depressed or sad; we were merely on another run to the Zanker Road Sanitary Landfills.  No that is not a typo - we went to both landfills.  At the first landfill, the one we went to in this Episode, and apparently the landfill for the privileged of society, but we were turned away and directed to the commoners' landfill.  Apparently our trash wasn't good enough to mix with the trash of the upper class.  Why we were allowed access to the exclusive landfill before we can only guess.  Perhaps it was the difference in materials we were hauling on our two trips.  Perhaps it would actually be more accurate to say that our second load consisted mostly of demo materials, which are accepted at the 2nd landfill, while our first load consisted mainly of wood and mixed materials.  The real point, however, is that our  back porch is now clear, and we're sorry to say that our fire sale is no longer in effect.  We'll still accept money, but we can't give you any of our old fixtures.  Here are pictures from our latest dump trip.

The loaded truck in the de-tarping area

That is not an empty cardboard box that we could have recycled - it is full of miscellaneous materials from our island delivery.

Some of the equipment at the dump reminded me of large dinosaurs feeding themselves.

Grraaaaahh!

The fearsome beast raises its toothy head and lets out a roar.

Grrrrr.

And the mighty fiend lowers its head to gorge itself again.

Home Depot Hoarding

While we had the use of Mike's truck we decided to make a run to Home Depot for a large load.  We picked up 20 bags of garden soil and a lot of bricks.  We can't tell you what it's all for, yet, because the project is not yet complete.

Lots o' soil and bricks

Little Birdy

The other day we found a little birdy on our back porch, apparently injured.  It was just sitting there, being vulnerable and easy to catch.  Our theory is that it flew, smack!, into our window and was stunned.  We later observed it hopping away, apparently recovered.

Random Fox

This is just a random fox seen recently by Bish at his workplace.

Painty Foot

How did Mr. Satchmo get green paint on his foot?  Has he been sneaking into rooms containing wet paint?  What color of paint is that?  Here's a hint:  It's not a shade we have revealed on this blog before.

Mr. Painty Foot
As you can probably surmise at this point, not a lot of actual housework got done since the previous Episode, but we have things in progress and in planning.  We have been moving at a little slower pace and watching more Olympics than usual.

Down in the Dumps, sounds like the beginning of new song lyrics for the old 60's golden oldie, Down in the Boondocks. . .

Ah landfills, Ritzville had a grand landfill, you could dump anything there, but alas, eventually it was buried and covered, when we hauled all the Ritzville stuff out, all that was left was a loading dock sort of a thing, from which, you threw your trash into the large hopper cars. Just not as romantic as the old days.

I seem to remember a certain gray cat, would get very excited when certain thumps would occur at our large back window. She would run outside to see if she could catch a bird, as a stunned bird was about the best she could do. Our other cat at the time, would ignore such easy prey, and instead, stare for hours at the same spot of ivy, waiting, waiting, for . . . well we are not sure??

The bricks look promising, I'm thinking a large backyard barbeque for when certain RV's travel to the San Jose area, but again, hopes are dashed, as those look to be landscape bricks.

@DR According to the pictures next to them at Home Depot, the bricks could potentially be used for either landscaping or small structures.
